TABLEAUX contains some of the finest compositions Rachmaninov ever composed for the piano, including the original 1913 version of the dynamic piano sonata in B-flat minor, Op. 36. Rachmaninov revised this sonata in 1931, but the revision sacrificed much of the original version's dramatic intensity. "Tableaux" also includes four of the "Etudes-Tableaux" from Op. 39: the violent opening piece in C minor, the poignant and lyrical A minor study, the well-loved E-flat minor etude-tableaux, and also the "military" D major. Preceding these four works, the album opens with one of Rachmaninov's most haunting pieces, the D major prelude from his Op. 23 set. The album concludes with two contrasting pieces by Scriabin: the mournful C-sharp minor prelude, and the explosive D-sharp minor etude from Op. 12 Tableaux Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1945)
